GOLDEN TASSELS
I love this theme! I have never been to the Middle East, and
have to admit that I know precious little about it. I do know that in my mind's
eye, it spells tassels and gold threads, beading en masse and brightly coloured
glass. Lanterns and mystery, flowing fabrics that sparkle and fold and change
in the light. Huge fat cushions with braiding and fringing, and big soft mattresses
in rich, plush fabrics. All this mixed in with packed earth floors and simple
homes, tiny staircases and carved wooden doors. Clay urns and copper coffee
pots, open fires and rich spicy food. The colours in the spices alone are enough
to send a colour-orientated person like myself on a frenzy of creativity.
Both Fiji and South Africa have large Indian communities and
for me they mean the most delicate and feminine of women, with their small frames
and stunning black hair, their skin so flawless and perfect in colour, and oh
those sarees! I don't look too authentic in a saree, but when I wear them (and
am happy to say that I have had opportunity to do so many times) I feel so feminine
and special, and I love the feel and sound of all that fabric around me. When
else do I get to wrap myself up in metres and metres of fabric and adorn my
hair and face with all things sparkly and gold, and go out in public?
All these things are my inspiration for this theme. The ideas
in my head are a huge mass of colour and beading and tassels and texture. Quilted
handbags and cushions, patchwork bedspreads, cross-stitch bookmarks and wall
hangings Brightly coloured fabric painted cushions and table runners using those
bright deep purples and the colours of the spices and clays. So although still
new, watch this space and enjoy the growth of this theme, and the products along
the way.....
