Born under an AFRICAN SKY
This theme was inspired by my birth country and the part of my
soul that will always belong there. There is something about the phrase "Born
Under and African Sky" that twinges the heart strings and conjures up the smells,
tastes and the feel of the vast blue sky by day and endless black of night,
that feels so unique and special about being born on such a wonderful continent.
The cultures of Africa lend themselves so well to craft of all kinds, with
tiny, coloured glass beads, the painted rondawels (native houses), and brightly
coloured clothing. The countryside is just as wonderful, with its rich rusts
and oranges of the desert sands, and the natural patterns of the skins of the
animals, especially the zebra and the big cats (leopard, cheetah etc). The glass
beads and rich patterns found in Africa's nature just cry out to be expressed
into art - cross stitches, patchwork, embroidery and the vibrant colours of
fabric paint. (I think that the best fabric paints in the world come from South

You don't have to be born in Africa to appreciate the richness
of its culture, and most people will never get there to experience all that
it has to share. All my work is inspired by my own experiences, and my love
for all the richness of colour that such a vast and varied continent has been
so richly blessed with. Many of my cross stitches, quilts, stationery and fabric
painting that fall under this African theme have a tinge of gold them From the
hand painted Aida cloth for the cross-stitching, the beads and threads in the
quilts, to the fabric paint liners, there is often a hint of gold. These subtle
touches of gold have great meaning, as they symbolize both the rich mineral
wealth that lies beneath the harsh earth, and the sparkle of human wealth that
lies beneath the poverty, corruption and hardship that plagues so many of the
African nations.
